    Constitutive behaviour of the metastable stainless steel: Sandvik Nanoflex

    This article presents a model to describe the constitutive behaviour of corrosion-resistant Sandvik steel NanoflexTM [1] during metal forming and hardening. This material is characterised by different phenomena. The material is metastable, which causes strain-induced transformation to take place during metal forming. Depending on the annealing conditions, the material also transforms isothermally [2, 3] (as opposed to a-thermal martensite). This transformation can also take place immediately after forming, as a result of the residual stresses present in the material. The martensite phase of this material can be aged [4]. Results of the various measurements on Sandvik NanoflexTM are shown. The measurements mainly involved tensile tests and upsetting tests, during which both isothermal transformation and strain-induced transformation were measured by inductive sensors[5] and they were afterwards examined. The hardening of the material and the increase in hardness during ageing was also examined.\ud Finally, a constitutive model based on literature and the measurement are presented. This model describes the isothermal,\ud stress-assisted transformation, strain-induced transformation, work hardening and ageing.     NOAA backscatter studies

    In the past year, NOAA has measured and analyzed another year's worth of backscatter over Boulder, CO. The average profile was computed from 80 satellite observations of backscatter spread throughout the year, using NOAA's CO2 coherent lidar operating at a wavelength of 10.59 microns. The seasonal averages show a familiar trend (highest backscattering in spring, perhaps due to Asian dust or biomass burning, and lowest backscattering in fall). The 1990 average profile was not significantly different from the 1988 or 1989 profiles, except that it displays a slight increase in the upper troposphere, perhaps due to the Redoubt Volcano. The NOAA's backscatter processing program (BETA) was refined to enable the calculation of gaseous absorption effects based on rawinsonde measurements, as well as using atmospheric models. NOAA participated in two intercomparisons of aerosol measuring instruments near Boulder, called FRLAB (Front Range Lidar, Aircraft, and Balloon Experiment). Considerable effort was also put into developing a multiagency science proposal to NASA headquarters to work with both JPL and NASA-Marshall to produce an airborne Doppler lidar facility for the DC-8

    A general procedure for the calculation of a class of two-loop Feynman diagrams is described. These are two-point functions containing three massive propagators, raised to integer powers, in the denominator, and arbitrary polynomials of the loop momenta in the numerator. The ultraviolet divergent parts are calculated analytically, while the remaining finite parts are obtained by a one-dimensional numerical integration, both below and above the threshold.     FE calculations on a three stage metal forming process of Sandvik Nanoflex

    Sandvik NanoflexTM combines good corrosion resistance with high strength. This steel has good deformability in\ud austenitic conditions. It belongs to the group of metastable austenites, which means that during deformation a strain-induced\ud transformation into martensite takes place. After deformation, transformation continues as a result of internal stresses. Both\ud transformations are stress-state and temperature dependent. A constitutive model for this steel has been formulated, based\ud on the macroscopic material behaviour measured by inductive measurements. Both the stress-assisted and the strain-induced\ud transformation into martensite have been incorporated in this model. Path-dependent work hardening has also been taken\ud into account. This article describes how the model is implemented in an internal Philips FE code called CRYSTAL, which is\ud a dedicated robust and accurate finite element solver. The implementation is based on lookup tables in combination with\ud feed-forward neural networks. The radial return method is used to determine the material state during and after plastic\ud flow, however, it has been extended to cope with the stiff character of the partial differential equation that describes the\ud transformation behaviour
